Economics

The Department of Economics opens the application at the beginning of Summer A for matriculation the following January. Applications are due during the third week of the Fall semester. Admissions decisions are available within one week. The application form is sent to the Economics Majors listserv. Eligibility Requirements for the admission to the undergraduate portion of the combined degree program:

• Minimum UF GPA of 3.25
• Complete ECO 3101 and ECO 3203 with a B or better
• Competitive GRE scores (Average GRE Q: 159.5 | Average GRE V: 158)
• Have completed 105 credits (including AP, IB, and Dual Enrollment) and all non-major requirements before beginning M.A. coursework.

Eligibility Requirements for admission to the graduate portion of the combined degree program:

• Completion of the undergraduate portion of the combined degree program, with a B or better in all graduate courses
• Meet the requirements for admission, including minimum GRE score, as established by the Graduate School and the Economics graduate program.
• Pursuant to Florida Statute, your application requires inclusion of all post-high school education and employment, as well as information about ongoing international affiliations and research funding. Please ensure this information is included on your curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé.

Interested students must apply to the combined degree program during the third week of their senior year. Upon acceptance, the Undergraduate Coordinator and Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Economics will approve 12 credits of 5000+ level courses that the student may take in their senior spring. The GRE should be taken by the summer before the senior year. In the spring of the senior year, the student will apply to the M.A. Program after applying for graduation for the B.A. degree. Upon acceptance to the M.A. program, the eligible combined degree graduate coursework will be transferred to count toward the M.A. degree during the first semester following award of the B.A. degree.

Financial Issues

Students should note the following regarding tuition and fees in this program:

• Tuition and fees are higher for graduate courses than for undergraduate courses, regardless of whether the courses are taken as an undergraduate or graduate student. Consult the UF Finance and Accounting for a complete list of current tuition and fees.
• UF Economics does not offer stipends or tuition waivers for graduate students enrolled in the M.A. program.

Combination Degree Scholarships

The Department of Economics awards two different scholarships to combined degree students:

• McClave Family Graduate Award: This scholarship award is made to new incoming students. There is no separate application for this award; all applicants to the BA/MA program are considered. The awards are based on a holistic review of all elements of an applicant’s combined degree application, but special emphasis is placed on academic achievements. For example, the Department of Economics will carefully consider a student’s undergraduate record and GRE scores when determining how to make these awards. Multiple awards of $2,500-$5,000 are made.
• Richard J. Schultz Graduate Scholarship in Antitrust Studies: This scholarship promotes and recognizes graduate studies around antitrust and competition issues. The award is made based on an antitrust case study competition that takes place between the first and second terms of the program. All students are invited to participate in the competition. A faculty committee reviews all submissions and determines the award recipient. A single award of $5,000 is made.
